A member asked:

After a long time, can self-harm become just a bad habit that has no significant connection to underlying mental health problems?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Always Meaning: Even when our behavior becomes a habit, it has an underlying meaning. Self harm is a behavior that can become a habit, but I believed it's still linked to emotional distress and pain. Often the physical pain becomes a coping mechanism to deal (or rather not to deal) with overwhelming emotional difficulties. Hotline: http://ow.ly/x7AVK
