Depth and impact: A stab wound is created when a sharp blade ruptures the skin and deeper tissues. The injury can damage adjacent tissues and organs which are interconnected and interrelated. Loss of blood, severity of damage to adjacent organs all affect healing process. Timing can be days, weeks, months until any real return to "normal" is identified. In short, the depth/severity of any stab wound is the answer.

Depends: This will depend on what injuries occurred from the stab wound. If injuries are confined to an area just below the skin, you might even go straight home from the emergency room. If organs or blood vessels were injured, surgery might be done and one would be in the hospital for days to weeks.
