A member asked:

Rhinoplasty: is shaving the nose bridge bone a proper way to narrow the nose instead of breaking the bone? i was told by a surgeon this was correct.

Different things: Shaving, filing, trimming or resecting the nasal bridge will reduce the size of the bump on the nose, and help give a straighter profile, but doesn't narrow the nose. But once this is done, there is now a gap between the two nasal bones, known as "the open roof". This has to be closed - and most commonly this is done by "in-fracturing" the nasal bones, to get them back together in the midline.

No: This will not narrow the nose but reduce any hump that you may have. Narrowing the bridge of the nose will require osteotomies (breaking the bone).

Depends: Sometimes the bridge can be filed down, but sometimes cuts in the bones called osteotomies are necessary to narrow the bridge of the nose.

Confusing terms: You should try not to get bogged down by the medical terminology. It is more important for you to tell your surgeon exactly what you want in results. Use a nose diagram, or your photos from front, side views and use a dry erase marker to draw what you want done. This communication is more helpful to the surgeon than discussing techniques.

Usually: When you shave down all but the smallest of bumps, there is an "open roof" on your nose. The bases of the nose pyramid are fractured and pushed together to close the roof.
