Is it normal to need a rapid step test?

Yes: Normal is not the right question. Is it "okay" to have a rapid strep test - yes, as long as it is followed up with a culture if the rapid test is negative. These rapid tests are over 95% accurate.

Treatable pbm: While viruses cause most of the sore throats, strep is common & treatable.Initiation of treatment as soon as DX is confirmed limits your potential to spread it to others.A rapid test helps verify DX & reduce abx use based on suspicion.Untreated strep can result in heart/kidney & neurologic pbs in some so accurate DX & rx is important. If your exam suggests strep, but you have no pain, i will test.
