A 47-year-old member asked:
Why do I still have nitrates and leukocytes on my urine dipstick when the urine culture is negative?
1 doctor answer • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Foster Carr answered
General Practice 33 years experience
Many reasons: There are many possible reasons why a urine culture is negative but the nitrates and leukocytes are positive. 1. If your taking antibiotics then that would prevent growth of the urine culture. 2. The leukocytes and nitrates do not represent an actual bacterial infection but other viral, chemical, or environmental reasons for a positive result 3. Dipstick test or urine culture tests are false.

A 51-year-old female asked:
Why is it I have white cells elevated in my urine yet when they do the urine culture nothing grows?

Dr. Ed Friedlander answered
Pathology 44 years experience
Other causes: Chlamydia, mycoplasma, and some possibly-immune bladder conditions can do this, and since you are a woman, there are always white cells in the vagina and doing the "clean catch" maneuver you're supposed to do for the urine is difficult or impossible. Don't forget TB or one of the obscure kidney diseases may also be considerations. Good luck, and correlate with your clinical findings.

A 28-year-old male asked:
What is the definition or description of: urine culture?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. George Klauber answered
Specializes in Pediatric Urology
Grow UTI bacteria: Tiny sample of urine is spread on a bacterial growth culture medium, e.G agar & placed in an incubator to grow. Positive urine cultures demonstrate colonies of bacteria which can then be identified. Such colonies can then be recultured in presence of various antibiotics to identify to which the isolated organism is sensitive. No growth is negative.
