Pica: The condition is called pica. - when a child eats objects other than food. It is not a symptom of a specific disease but is more commonly seen in children with mental disabilities. I suggest your child be checked for lead and any developmental disorders.

See doc: Pica- abnormal appetite for non foods, including dirt, corn starch, ice chips, etc. Can be a sign of iron deficirncy ; lots of causes: bad diet, parasites like hookworm, intestinal disorders like celiac sprue and inflammatory bowel disease; menstrual losses; other; toxicity from lead. Rare metabolic diseases can do it. Psychological diseases can as well. Much depends on age, living conditions.Cmd.
