VERY IMPORTANT: Please do not insert anything to attempt to get food out of a child's mouth or esophagus. Please see your GI specialist for problems swallowing so they can conduct studies and recommend management strategies. Please call 911 immediately if your child feels he has something stuck in throat and having difficulty breathing.

GI evaluation: You mention that your boy friend had several defects that were likely operated on at birth. If he does have an issue with swallowing, he needs to be seen by a GI specialist. There are possibly some swallowing coordination defects or a stricture that would benefit from endoscopy to assess the issue and stretching if a narrowing is bad enough.
