Varies w/ Treatment: With most bone grafts, a pocket is made under the gum next to the area where bone is needed and the graft is placed and sutured in place. The graft varies from artificial bone, freeze-dried demineraled bone, to bone harvested from you. The first two have less pain than using your bone due to two sites (donor & recipient) and larger grafts mean more surgery with more post-op healing.

May or may not: A cleft lip occurs when a primary palate does not fuse. It may not involve the palate. A bone graft on the teeth, away from the cleft area, should have no effect at all. A fail bone graft in the cleft area may intensify the destruction of bone in the area and upon failure would lead to oral nasal communication. Consult with your oral surgeon.
