Caution required: In dilated cardiomyopathy, the decreased ejection fraction (squeezing function of the heart) may cause "back-up" of pressure which can result in fluid retention and edema (lungs, legs, abdomen, etc). Lasix (furosemide) can be quite helpful for this. If blood pressure is low, Lasix (furosemide) can be harmful, because blood pressure can worsen. Independently, low sodium is a marker for worse prognosis in cardiomyopathy.
