It depends: Antipsychotic medications are a common and effective treatment for schizophrenia. Supportive therapies that aim to improve social functioning and promote autonomy are also an important component of treatment. The best treatment largely depends on individual differences such as the severity of the illness and the subtype of schizophrenia.

Symptom based: There is not one overall treatment for schizophrenia. There are 3 separate groups of symptoms and each require different treatment. Positive symptoms (hallucinations and delusions) requirean antipsychotic (ap). Negative symptoms (lack of initiative and poor social skills) may be helped by behavioral therapy or sometimes antidepressants. Disorganization may be helped by ap and social structure.
