You do not: Valacyclovir can be used to diminish the frequency of recurrent outbreaks, or to treat and shorten the duration of an acute outbreak, as a side benefit they may decrease the numbers of virus being shed and by doing so, partially diminish the risks of transmission to others, but this is a minimal benefit at best.
