do electrolytes in smart water cause strong smelling/dark urine the way sodas can? should i only drink electrolyte-free water?

No: No. You may be prone to dehydration if you have dark urine. Try drinking regular tap water, smart water, bottled water, etc., any type of water. Drink less soda, coffe, tea.
