Can doc just prescribe insulin without meds to diabetics?

Yes: Oral diabetic meds will only work in type 2 diabetes. If you have type 1 diabetes, the only treatment is insulin. Although, most type 2 diabetics do better on oral agents in addition to insulin, one can treat type 2 diabetes with just Insulin as well.
