A member asked:

Why should vitamins with iron be avoided after menopause?

Iron accumulates: When you are menstruating every month you lose red blood cells which contain iron, so iron rich foods and sometimes iron supplements are good. Too much iron can damage cells, so when you aren't disposing of excess iron through menstruation, it can accumulate. That's why post menopause you should not take iron supplements unless you are anemic.

Vitamins with iron: are often recommended to women when they are menstruating because the monthly blood loss especially if it is heavy or prolonged can lead to anemia. After menopause this is not a factor. Recommendations for the use of iron should be based on lab studies because in certain individuals iron can be harmful.
