For what?: There are real reasons to take pain killers and muscle relaxers. Chronic use of some pain killers is associated with addiction and dependency. That's why more and more states are making it harder to write them and get them. But fixing the problem is always advisable to just treating the symptoms.

Band Aid: Pain killers, by themselves, are "band aids" they only treat the what you feel and not the cause of the pain. Pain killers can be taken for a long time without any impact on the pain cause. Antiinflammatories, muscle relaxers, and anti-convulsants/depressants are aimed to treat the cause of pain. Discuss with your doctor alternatives to treat the cause of the pain before resorting to pain pills.
