Anatomy: If gallstones decide to leave the gallbladder, they travel from the gb to the cystic duct into the common bile duct. The duct that drains the pancreas joins the common bile duct. If a gallstone gets lodged, this causes inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

Blocked pancreas: Gallstones can get into the plumbing around the liver, specifically into the common bile duct. The gallstone passes the plumbing for the pancreas on its way out to the body (pancreatic duct), and in some cases blocks the pancreatic duct. The pancreas produces fluid that collects in the blocked duct and causes increased pressure in the duct. This causes the pancreatitis.
