Sore throat: A sore throat can be from a few things-- strept germ, virues, mononucleosis, or other rare things. My advice is go get a strept test to make sure you do not have a serious illness. Tea will not help!

Abscess?: What you are describing could be symptoms of an abscess in your throat, either near your tonsils or in the back of your throat. If you have a fever with this, then you need to see your doc right away. This could also just be a case of strep throat or a similar sore throat, which also needs to be checked out. Go see your doc.

I accidentally inhaled quite a bit of smoke from a burning paper towel. A few hours later and now my throat feels a bit sore. Is this normal?

Should pass: Smoke & heat can both irritate your airway & the back of your mouth. Gargling with a bit of mouth rinse or sucking on ice chips may provide some relief, as would hard candy. By morning it should pass unless you truly scorched your airway, then it might take a little more time.

Sore : Sore throat is a fairly common symptom associated with many illnesses. Most of the time it resolves on its own without any other issues. Occasionally it can be due to something more serious that needs treatment. Reasons to seek care are:
- any fever - since it could be strep and you can't tell without an exam/testing
- if it lasts longer than 3 or 4 days
- any difficulty opening your mouth
- unable to swallow
- severe pain
- bleeding in the throat
- redness or swelling on the outside of the neck
- any difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
in the meantime, taking Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen for pain, drinking plenty of fluids such as hot tea/broth or cold liquids and a spoonful of honey can help.

This is not a cure : For your cyclic vomiting syndrome. However you can gargle with aloe vera juice a couple of times per day which may help with the pain. Otherwise your dentist or physician can order you a "cocktail" (medication mix) that can help with the pain.
