Further evaluation: Protein in the urine can be the first sign of diabetes damaging the kidneys. You should do a 24 hr urine collection for total protein excretion. If this is abnormal you should be on medications that protect your kidneys (ace inhibitor or arb). Good diabetes control is also essential. Your hba1c needs to be under 7% and under 6.5% if possible.
