A 34-year-old member asked:

can triple antibiotic ointment get rid of scars on my arms?

Forever Present: A scar forms when there is healing of an injury to the tissues. Remember that with almost all wounds, healing continues for months and months as we change the stress on the tissues. A scar forms as a result and may have many different appearances and colors. Any dark coloration may fade over time but the tissues never are the same and so some scarring will always be there.

How can I prevent swollen ankles and feet in pregnancy?

Avoid salt: Swollen feet and ankles are common in pregnancy. As the uterus gets bigger it puts pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvis returning the blood from the legs back to the heart. This can make blood flow slower and increase swelling. Avoiding salt, drinking plenty of water, and elevating your feet can help reduce swelling. Be aware it may not go away until a few weeks after the baby is born.

I'm 11 weeks and have a urinary tract infection. Is it safe to take an antibiotic for the remainder of my pregnancy?

Yes: A simple bladder infection in pregnancy can be treated with antibiotics over the course of 7 days typically. Prolonged antibiotic therapy is not usually necessary unless an infection involving the kidney has been diagnosed and initially managed with treatment doses of antibiotics. Following treatment, a lower dose antibiotic may be used to prevent recurrence for the remainder of the pregnancy.

Prevent malaria best with doxycycline or mefloquine if travelling abroad?

Dr. Joel Gallant

Depends: The choice of prophylaxis is based in part on where you're going and the resistance patterns of the malaria in the area. The cdc has a good website that discusses this issue based on region or country. When in doubt, see a travel medicine specialist.

Ultrasound. : It is unusual for blood clots in the calf to cause severe pain. However, the test is simple. Get an ultrasound to rule this out because you already have a personal history of deep vein thrombosis.
