Brush or scrape it: The coating you describe is a buildup of particles from the many things you put in your mouth. The tongue surface is made of deep fissures that easily trap and collect these particles. To get rid of it get in the habit of brushing your tongue when you brush your teeth. You can also scape the tongue with a tongue scraper or the edge of a spoon or a smooth table knife. Food tastes better, too.
