There are a: Number of medications that can be used to assist with stopping alcohol use. I have found that auricular (ear) acupuncture is particularly helpful for decreasing cravings.

Antabuse (disulfiram): Yes it is dangerous as it causes severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, diarrhea and rarely death the principle is to pair alcohol with a noxious stimuli so after that reaction you don't feel like drinking alcohol again.
