Not common: Especially if you follow your dentist's instructions. Follow the post-op instructions of your dentist. Typically this means no rinsing, sucking through a straw or spitting out for the first 24 hours. Also avoid eating hard foods in that area for at least one week. Brush and floss gently in the area until the socket closes. Do not smoke for at least 3-4 days following the extraction.
