Sudden pain : This could be a gout attack this could be a ankle sprain -strain if it doesnt get better soon see a podiatrist or orthopod for an exam.

Could be many: Many things can cause pain to the ankle such as ligament rupture, nerve entrapment, gout, tendon subluxation and many more. Try rest, ice, compression and elevation. If it persists consult a foot and ankle specialist.
