'POP' those ears: When you have a cold, your eustachian tubes, which connect your middle ears to your throat, are often plugged up. If you do the same tricks used when flying to 'open' your ears, this will help. Chew gum, yawn and pop your ears by plugging your nose and mouth and blowing. You can do this every few minutes if needed to try to equalize the pressure between ears and throat, alleviating the pain.
