Sore throat: A sore throat can last 24 to 72 hours, followed bygradual resolution. But then the other sequelae of viral or bacterial infection--cough, fever, sputum production, etc--can occur over the next few days. One should be concerned in the rare instance that throat pain is followed by severe or incapacitating symptoms (ie high fever, malaise, nausea, vomiting, etc). These should prompt a doctor visit.
