A member asked:

Which antibiotics are the best for tooth abscesses (that have spread to your ear and tonsils)?

Recognize the danger: First, infections spreading to other areas, especially distant areas like these, should be considered serious. Seek treatment now. Second, in selecting an antibiotic there are multiple considerations to think about (i.e. Allergies, other meds, side effects, etc.). Having said that, a common approach is a combo of penicillin and metronidazole. Clindamycin is also another option.

Prof judgment: Your treating doctor should be the one making the decision as to what treatment and what antibiotics are best for you under any set of circumstances. There is no generally agreed upon "best" one. It depends upon your medical history, other possible medications, allergies, prior antibiotics taken and results, etc.
