Stones vs. spasms: Clearly back problems can result in flank region discomfort. However my concern in that location is always whether or not the symptoms could be originating from the kidneys. Kidney stones cause a condition called renal colic. In renal colic severe pain which comes and goes periodically can occur. A simple urine analysis will help to determine whether or not this might be the problem. Good luck.
