Activity, OTC meds: Chronic back pain is a very common complaint. Most is due to muscle strain or sometimes minor disc problems. As a start, otc meds like Ibuprofen and usual activities are best. Physical therapy, massage, short courses of muscle relaxants are helpful in some cases. There is little value to any imaging early on in most back pain. Narcotics are essentially never indicated. Discuss with your pcp.
