A member asked:

What is a thyroid nodual?

4 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

See below: The thyroid should be a relatively smooth and homogenous organ on ultrasound. Occasionally people will have growths within the thyroid that appear like little cysts or nodules - sometimes one and sometimes many. Most are benign and do not cause any trouble, but sometimes they can become very large, sometimes they can secrete thyroid hormone and sometimes they can become cancerous.

Thyroid nodule: A thyroid nodule is a lump in an otherwise normal thyroid gland . Most patients with thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and most nodules are found on clinical examination or self-palpation.
