Yes: Wearing braces can be very challenging. Check with your dentist and make sure you also keep up with regular brushing and flossing to keep things meticulous.

May be normal but...: Swollen gums are not good and are an indication that you are not maintaining well. If they remain swollen throughout the entire treatment, you may end up with moderate gumline problems and decay. I always have my patients use an electric toothbrush. They clean much better! consider the oral b as they have many different style brush heads for you to choose from including one for orthodontics.

Brush and floss: Not uncommon to have bleeding gums when you are going thru braces. It is very important to brush and floss 3-4x daily until the gums improve. Talk with your dentist.

When did you start?: The symptoms you relate are not indicative of good oral hygiene, exacerbated by all the extra surface area of the appliances. If you started recently, then you can turn it all around by meticulous care in brushing and flossing. If you have been in tx a while, chronic gum problems and enamel decalcification may be already established. It is not not normal, but common and you can correct your course.

Not normal: While there may be some transient irritation from new braces, your orthodontist should be able to give you instructions for managing this. Swollen gums are usually due to a hygiene problem. Healthy gums do not bleed. Keep your mouth immaculately clean. Water pik extremely helpful. You may have to take advil, (ibuprofen) rinse w salt water, apply wax, for the first few days. If not, see your orthodontist.
