A member asked:

If your small intestine ruptures, how long does it take for gangrene to set in and take affect? what causes your small intestine to rupture?

Peritonitis: Peritonitis is a serious infection that occurs when the intestines rupture, not gangrene. Peritonitis can become very serious or life threatening within hours of intestinal rupture. Small bowel perforation is not that common & most often would occur due to intestinal blockage from internal adhesions.

See below: It is intestinal gangrene that may lead to rupture, not vise versa. The most common causes are irregular heart beats and or cancer.
