Is "abnormal marrow edema" the same as stress fracture on an mri?

Can be: Very early stress fractures can sometimes only result in bone marrow edema on mri. Mri is not great at looking at the cortical (calcified) bone, but is great at looking for abnormal fluid on the surface of the bone (periosteal) and at the bone marrow.
