Usually: The typical viral illness lasts 7-14 days. There are usually early symptoms such as clear mucous, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, congestion, and aches. Later symptoms are discolored mucous, congestion, and cough which may take an additional 2 weeks to clear. A sinus infection has similar symptoms but they either continue to worsen, or plateau and persist for 3 or more weeks. Treat colds early.
