Reward: A child's job at this age is to test limits. That's how they discover the rules of their world. They test you to see what limits you will set for them. However, if you give me a mild punishment and then a large reward, then there is no real punishment. You should eliminate the hugging, and any praise, after the punishment. Simply take another time out and say a stern "no-hit" and move on.
