Before your late: Don't waste money on a pregnancy test before your period is late. But if you are even a day late and you normally have regular cycles, it is reasonable to take one.

2-3 d before period: Home pregnancy tests can pick up a pregnancy as early as 2-3 days before you miss a period. If you're patient, though, you could just wait a couple more days and see if you start on time.
