Allopurinol: If you do not have gout, meds are usually not needed. If you do have gout, Allopurinol is the drug of choice to lower uric acid levels.

It depends: Reasons to be treated for high uric acid include at least 2 flares of gout per year, or a history of uric acid kidney stones. If there is no gout or kidney stones, treatment for high uric acid is usually not necessary. If there is a reason to treat, Allopurinol is the drug of choice. Febuxostat is a newer, more expensive option if Allopurinol is not effective or there is an allergy.
