Virus: It's caused by a virus called the jc virus, usually triggered by suppressed immune system (more common in aids patients). It's diagnosed on MRI and dna sample from spinal fluid or brain biopsy.

The JC virus: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is caused by the jc virus. The virus is very common, but doesn't usually cause problems unless the immune system is impaired. It can be suspected based on brain MRI imaging in an immunocompromised patient. Other diagnostic tests include sending spinal fluid for jc virus PCR and brain biopsy. There is no treatment other than improving the immune system.
