Insult to injury: If you remember that sunburn is an injury to the skin caused by radiation, the skin is already damaged. Healing inflammation occurs (red, hot, swollen, tender) to heal damaged skin. Ice to already injured tissues will increase the injury like frostbite. Better to use cool cloths, protective creams and take antiinflammation medicines like Motrin or advil (ibuprofen).
