Following injuries such as a sprain or a strain of the ankle, applying ice for a short period of time, along with leg elevation, may help reduce the swelling. If the swelling is caused by medication or fluid overload condition such as heart failure, icing will not help. If you do not know the cause of the leg swelling, I would suggest following up with you a doc for further evaluation. Good luck
