Biological memory: During development of a vaccine various protocols are developed looking at the best way to give lasting immunity when a vaccine if initially found helpful. If a single dose will do it, the effort stops there. If they find that immunity is temporary after a single dose, they test different booster patterns(number & spacing) until they come up with one that works for the most people.
