Swelling: The term swelling means increased fluid in the area. This can be fluid retention from high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney , thyroid, or other gland disorders, if the swelling is painful and only at the ankle, with ankle tenderness, it could be arthritis.

Big or small : Ankle swelling can simply come from fluid overload, hypertension, or heart conditions. In this case, it is usually both ankles that are swollen. If if is one ankle that is swollen then it can be a sign of many potential nlle issues from a sprain to arthritis.
