You usually don't: If a doctor or you dtect a thyoid nodule, then it needs to be evaluated. The vast majority of thyroid, nodules, however, are benign adenomas and not cancers.

Imaging can help...: Do you have a thyroid nodule? Ultrasound can help characterize a thyroid nodule. Characteristics such as calcification can shed more light on the situation. Nuclear medicine thyroid scan can also be helpful. If imaging is suspicious, biopsy is recommended.
