Emergency: Adrenal crisis occurs when there is abrupt loss of adrenal hormones or treatment of addison's disease is suddenly stopped. Symptoms include low blood pressure leading to shock, confusion leading to loss of consciousness, low blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance leading to instability of the heart rhythm, and can result in death. Treatment is required urgently.

Life threatening: Acute adrenal crisis is one of the few true endocrine disorders. Due to a lack of cortisol, a crisis is usually brought on by an infection or injury. The patients blood pressure can be dangerously low, the person can have low blood sugar, and if untreated can be fatal. It requires hospitalization and the patient needs intravenous steroids, IV fluids and treatment of any infection.
