A tropical fire ant: Sting injects solenopsin - an alkaloid venom. This leads to a welt which can become fairly swollen & then a sterile pustule. The stings are definitely painful. About 15% of people have fire ant sting allergies. The sxs may be mild or could be more severe w hives, swelling (mouth, tongue, lips), nausea, chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness or shock.
