Avoidance is key: DEET is effective in prevention of mosquito and tick bites and roaming fire ant bites, but is not effective in preventing bites from defensive ants that have been disturbed from an ant hill. After bites, use cold compresses to minimize the allergic reaction and lower itchiness. Once infected, warm compresses are helpful in reducing the redness and swelling.
