A member asked:

Does one have to do an echo test for down syndrome baby?

Often: Endocardial cushion defects are common in down's syndrome. I would urge an echocardiogram be done as a precaution, especially if the doctor heard a cardiac murmur on exam.

Confusing question: Prenatal echos are offered by ob's routinely as ds can occur at any maternal age. You can either have it done or not and some would have you sign a waver saying it was offered but you elected not to. If a ds infant is born, a cardiac echo is routine because 1/3 will have a congenital malformation of the heart.
