Major Depression: When depressed mood becomes so severe, or persists so long, that it starts to interfere with your life (whether it be your job, your relationships, etc.), there's a good chance you're suffering from a major depressive episode, which can be treated by a psychiatrist. Sometimes depression is a symptom of a non-psychiatric illness, so a medical workup is often part of the evaluation as well.

Illness adjustment: The stigma of having any illness but in particular an emotional illness can be embarrassing. Many feel uncomfortable because there are not more objective signs like an x-ray or specific blood test to verify its presence or make the diagnosis. Many do not have clarity as to what remission is - and unwittingly settle for only partial benefits. Side effects from meds or delays in response are hard.
