Colon outpouching: Diverticulosis is an outpouching of the wall of the colon due to a weakness in the colonic wall. Diverticulitis is when something gets stuck in the outpouching, causing an infection to occur there.

Infection or not.: Diverticulosis is the presence of diverticuli, while diverticulitis is an infection of same (technically a micro perforation which leads to infection).
