Forever or no time: Small non-sytomatic kidney stone causing no obstruction nor enlarging can remain indefinitely. Symptomatic stones with blockage or associated infection/pyelonephritis usually requires urgent treatment & should remain as short a time as possible. Large, enlarging or "staghorn" stones & obstruction from stone or kidney abdormality should be managed expeditiously & should not remain in kidney.
