How good are epidurial cortisone injections for a pinched nerve?

Dr. Stan Lee answered

Fair: There is strong scientific evidence that esi for a pinched nerve from an acute disk herniation can help control symptoms, buy time for recovery, and decrease the need for microdiscectomy. Esi for a pinched nerve from sources other than an acute disk herniation is widely accepted, but less definitively proven. Esi in the absence of symptomatic nerve compression is of unproven benefit.
